THE MINISTRY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
Luke 4:14
And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.
As we start this study, I want to start with this verse, but before we start here, let’s lay some groundwork
Let us go back a few days when Jesus received the Holy Spirit
Matthew 3:16
And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:
So from this verse we see the Holy Spirit lighting upon Jesus
John 1:32
And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.
So John saw the Spirit descending upon Jesus
Now we see the Spirit abode upon Jesus
Abode - Strongs - to stay (in a given place, state, relation or expectancy) : - abide, continue, dwell, endure, be present, remain,
Now we see that the Holy Spirit came to abide, to continue, to dwell, to be present, to remain in Jesus' life after John had baptize him in water
So let us pick up our study on the ministry of the Holy Spirit right here after Jesus came up out of the water, and the Spirit descending upon Him
Luke 4:1-14
And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
When the Holy Spirit descending upon Jesus, He received the fullness of the Holy spirit
John 3:34
For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.
So God gave Jesus the Spirit without measure
Jesus being full of the Spirit, was led of the Spirit into the wilderness
[2] Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered.
So now we see Jesus led in the wilderness, He is there for forty days, he is tempted of the devil, He has fasting forty days, now He is hungry
[3] And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread.
After forty days the devil is tempting Him, tempting Him to prove that He is the Son of God
Satan tries to get Jesus to turn stone into bread
After all He is hungry, He is the Son of God, why not bread would be nice after forty days of not eating
We need to learn the voice of God and the voice of Satan
Why not because the devil said, the devil tempts Christians even today to disobey God
[4] And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.
Jesus answer the devil, with the word of God, we need to answer the devil with the word of God
It is written
God has spoken
The issue is over
Notice the devil doesn't give up that easy, Jesus stood His ground, and brothers and sister it is time for us to stand our ground
Luke 4:5
And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
[6] And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.
[7] If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine.
Satan now tries to tempt Jesus with the kingdoms of the world, all the power, and glory I will give you
This power the devil said it was delivered unto him and that he could give it to, whoever he wanted
Notice the devil is tempting Jesus with what will be His in the future
So many times the devil will try, and sometimes succeeds at tempting us Christians, with something that God has for us in the future, and so getting us out of the will of God, and even sinning against God
We should want what God wants for us at the time He wants it for us
[8] And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
Again Jesus answered the devil
It is written
God has spoken
The issue is over
Jesus says, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
But Satan doesn't give up that easy
[9] And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence:
Satan tries to tempt Jesus to prove He is the Son of God, I wonder how many times Satan gets Christians to try and prove they are something in the kingdom
I remember years ago getting caught up in this trap, trying to prove I was call to preach
If you have to prove it God won't, let God prove who you are
[10] For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee:
[11] And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
Notice that Satan now is using the Word
Satan said God will take care of you, God says he will take care of you
What does Jesus do
[12] And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
Jesus says we should not tempt the Lord our God
When we try to show the power or protection we have in God it is a temptation of Satan
It is tempting God and we are not to do that
[13] And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.
The devil ended the temptation at this time
Notice Satan left for a season
Satan will tempt us and if we overcome, he will leave us for a season
But he will come back with some more temptation
Always remember who God is
Remember
It is written
God has spoken
The issue is over
[14] And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.
