OVERCOMING UNBELIEF (2)
(1) Matthew 13:58
And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief.
(2) Matthew 17:21
Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.
(3) Mark 6:6
And he marvelled because of their unbelief. And he went round about the villages, teaching.
THREE THINGS TO DO TO OVERCOME UNBELIEF
1. PRAYER
2. FASTING
3. TEACHING
PRAYER
I. LOOKING AT PEOPLE THAT PRAY
1. Jesus
(1) I chose Jesus first because He is our example
(2) 1 Peter 2:21
For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:
(3) How did Jesus pray
(4) Matthew 26:39
And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.
(5) The first thing we need to learn in prayer is not our will, or our way but what God wants in the thing that I am praying about, what is God's will
(6) I need to know God's will so that I can pray with confidence
(7) Mark 1:35
And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed.
(8) Jesus got up and prayed before daylight
(9) Also notice He got alone with God
(10) Luke 5:16
And he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed.
(11) Matthew 14:23
And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.
(12) So we see Jesus praying in the morning praying in the morning, and praying most of the time alone
(13) Luke 6:12
And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.
(14) Sometimes Jesus prayed all night
(15) This is our example
(16) You say but that was Jesus, the only begotten Son of God, well let's look at some others
2. Elijah
(1) James 5:17-18
Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months.
[18] And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.
(2) [Elias] Elijah was subject to like passions, desire like we are
(3) James 5:16
Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
3. Moses
(1) Numbers 11:2
And the people cried unto Moses; and when Moses prayed unto the Lord, the fire was quenched.
(2) What is going on here
(3) Numbers 11:1-2
And when the people complained, it displeased the Lord: and the Lord heard it; and his anger was kindled; and the fire of the Lord burnt among them, and consumed them that were in the uttermost parts of the camp.
[2] And the people cried unto Moses; and when Moses prayed unto the Lord, the fire was quenched.
(4) When people complain, the Lord will be displeased
(5) When people complain, the Lord hears
(6) When people complain, the Lord becomes angry
(7) When people complain, the Lord sends judgment
(8) Now God is not hearing the people, because He is displeased, angry, and He has sent judgment
(9) So they cry to the man of God, and the man of God prays for them, but remember they got here because of their complaining
(10) Numbers 21:5-8
And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loatheth this light bread.
[6] And the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.
[7] Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord, and against thee; pray unto the Lord, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people.
[8] And the Lord said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.
(11) Here is the same old thing, speaking against God, and the man of God, judgment comes from God, ask man of God to pray for them, God gives answer to man of God
(12) Will we ever learn?
4. Daniel
(1) Daniel 6:10
Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime.
(2) If they past a law and say we can not pray, what to we do, pray anyway
(3) But notice that Daniel was praying before they past the law |
